Calming Master Bedroom Interior Design

Project Description

Hello! I am moving into a new construction 1-bedroom condo in October. I have a few pieces of furniture that I will be bringing with me, but otherwise I'm starting from scratch and would love to get some direction for creating a space with personality and homey-ness.

I'm not 100% sure of my design style -- I lean towards modern but with just enough whimsy to create warmth. I will need some guidance from your design experts.

I will need to do this in stages versus all at once - starting with any paint/wallpaper/lighting and other finishes that would be good to do before moving in, and filling in with furniture and accessories over time.

Generally I dislike that much of the furniture I've been living is old (since college/grad school) or mismatched pieces passed down from parents. My apartments have never had an overall cohesive feel.

I also don't like very dark woods -- I prefer lighter, warmer shades. I like some mixed metals but not a fully industrial feel.

What pieces of existing furniture, lighting, art or accessories do you want to keep in the design?

The couch, coffee table, and bookshelf currently posing as a TV stand will stay. Everything else is hand-me-down or very old and I'm open to replacing them.

Re: question about changing the floors, I'm open to rugs and coverings but no adjustments to the wood.

I generally like how the model unit is staged, but I think it feels a bit sterile and could use some color/life.

Would like to incorporate some greenery and perhaps a gallery wall -- I have always wanted to print and frame photos from my travels around the world.

I love my books and would like to be able to display them -- in a bookcase or a built-in, or something else.

Similar to the living and dining room, I'm still using furniture that's old and has been passed down. I also feel like the current pieces I'm using feel bland and don't provide the warmth I'd like to see in a bedroom.

I'm open to this room feeling a touch more feminine than masculine but I don't want to be overwhelmed with pink... would prefer subtle touches. I like the way it's done in your "hollywood glam" bedroom example on your blog (https://www.decorilla.com/online-decorating/interior-design-styles-101/#more-16307) - but maybe not QUITE that far.

I will have custom closets installed so a large dresser is not necessary. I would like to consider something that can function as a desk and/or vanity.

I will also want to install a ceiling fan (with or without lighting) in the bedroom, if you have recommendations.

Combined Living/Dining:

Since your room gets plenty of sunlight your color options are quite broad.

For your main color, we chose to use white/off-white as it offers a fresh, clean, feel to the space. White and off-white colors are often a favorite for walls because they are light, neutral, and match most color schemes. They are known to make rooms feel more airy and spacious and allows for the artwork, pillows and other items to really make the statement.

Use a matte finish paint because it will be helpful in camouflaging those surface imperfections such as bumps and cracks as it does not reflect light. Just be careful because matte finish is more difficult to clean. You may also need to touch up scratches or marks by adding more of the same paint in the future.
