Project Description

This project is for 3 bedrooms: the master bedroom, and 2 kids rooms.

The priority is the master bedroom.

There is great light in this room but I feel the dark furniture gives the room a heavy feeling. Furniture needs to be replaced and we'd like to have blackout window dressings. I'd love some seating area in the bedroom. Art for walls etc

2nd room is currently our second kid room but we want to turn it into a bedroom/playroom for our other kid.

We'll keep the bed but all other furniture to be replaced. The wardrobe is a good size, there is plenty of storage in it so I'm not sure we'd need another chest of drawers.

We need to replace the blinds also and would like them to be blackout.

The room is the largest of the kids bedrooms so should have a seating area, maybe bean bags etc

Last room we'd like to change to our 6 years olds bedroom, currently his younger brother sleeps there and we didn't do anything else with it since we bought the house. The cot will go and all existing furniture replaced. The window at the back has a ledge which would be great as a reading nook, we'd also like a desk/artist area as he's really into drawing and art and a queen size bed.

We'd like to avoid themed bedrooms (superheroes etc).

I don't like the blinds so would love to update those also and get more light into the room, but also have a blackout blind so it is dark when he needs sleep.

We are currently debating whether we should have the bigger of the boys room a shared bedroom and the smaller one a spare room. We would like to discuss this further.

What do you currently dislike about the room?

Furniture is very heavy and although there is a lot of light in the room it doesn't feel like a light room. I don't like the window treatments (rails/blinds etc). It is an unusually shaped room but perfect for art displays.

What pieces of existing furniture, lighting, art or accessories do you want to keep in the design?

The position of the bed (not the bed itself) as it faces the garden which is great (it is currently a california king) We would like to replace all furniture. We will not be able to replace the ceiling lighting due to the location of the fan which is also dark wood. We are open to removing the ceiling fan.

Additional comments to designers

There is quiet a long walk way to the room with lots of storage and an entry way to our bathroom. It would be great to brighten this up and the colour scheme will need to come up to this entrance. We're happy to send a video of the room to make it clearer. The pictures don't really do it justice on how bright the room can get. The furniture really dulls it.

It's just not a pretty room! The furniture is heavy and ugly (except the bed).

The bed.
I have some artwork that a friend did for our son, it is currently unframed and there are 6 pieces. They are of different animals. I'd like to incorporate these.

Additional comments to designers

We are still discussing whether to have this as a shared room for our sons. My husband is concerned that the room isn't big enough to fit two beds. We'd like to discuss this or maybe have two concepts, one with 2 beds and the second with one bed. Happy to chat through this.

Bedroom:

Since your room gets plenty of sunlight your color options are quite broad.

For your main color, we chose to use white/off-white as it offers a fresh, clean, feel to the space. White and off-white colors are often a favorite for walls because they are light, neutral, and match most color schemes. They are known to make rooms feel more airy and spacious.

Use an eggshell finish paint which has a very light touch of shine (similar texture to an eggshell as implied by its name). This finish is very often used for walls and is more durable and easier to clean than matte finish

Using lighter colors in your medium-sized room will make it feel more airy and bright

For your main color, we chose to use white/off-white as it offers a fresh, clean, feel to the space. White and off-white colors are often a favorite for walls because they are light, neutral, and match most color schemes. They are known to make rooms feel more airy and spacious.

Use a matte finish paint because it will be helpful in camouflaging those surface imperfections such as bumps and cracks as it does not reflect light. Just be careful because matte finish is more difficult to clean. You may also need to touch up scratches or marks by adding more of the same paint in the future.
