Eclectic Vaulted Ceilings Living & Dining Decor

Project Description

We recently renovated a 1959 mid-century modern house and have been struggling to furnish it and decorate it for family, work-from-home and entertaining. We have a combination of wonderful family oriental carpets and artwork, Crate and Barrel furniture and some other odds and ends, but no cohesive look or coordination of our space. We are an active family of 5 - three kids (ages 6 & 8) and two adults who work from home. We would like modern and comfortable shared living spaces and would like to make the most out of the very large, open floor plan that we have.

What do you currently dislike about the room?

Hard to know where to place the furniture because the space is so open. Also, lacks shelving and storage for tableware for the dining room. The dining area doesn't have a lot of wall space to put furniture or artwork on because of windows and open floor plan. It's hard to define the areas and utilize them to the fullest. Also, whatever is going on (playing with toys/games), dishes, coats/shoes in entry, laundry is hard to hide. Everything is always viewable from the minute someone walks into the front door. We hope that with more defined spaces with specific uses, we can then have better ways to handle the clutter.

What pieces of existing furniture, lighting, art or accessories do you want to keep in the design?

We'd like to keep the C&B Estilo cabinet (18"w x 61"h x 40"d) and the oriental rug (11 ft x 14 ft). We also have a relatively new C&B Lakin dining table (81"l x 38"w x 30"h) which extends to 119"l with optional leaves. It would be nice to use this if it makes sense. We like the rope dining chairs, but can re-use them elsewhere. We also have a relatively new West Elm Axel Sofa (76"w x 35.5"d x 34"h). We can perhaps find another spot for it in the house, but it would be nice to use if it fits in the plan. We want to keep the built-in shelving units underneath the windows (18"d x 32"h), but are open to changing the countertop. We have many pieces of artwork to choose from and would appreciate guidance on which ones to incorporate in the design. We included a snapshot of the many different pieces of artwork that my mother-in-law painted. We can send more specific pictures and ask your help in selecting the pieces to frame and hang.

Additional comments to designers

Because the living/dining area is so large and spans the width of the house and the room is oriented east to west, we receive morning light in one area and afternoon light in the other area. There is a corner of the glassed-in east side of the house that receives wonderful morning light in the corner and would be perfect for a sitting area. We are happy to help discuss the light and how it impacts the overall feel and use of the living/dining area. We would love to have multiple spaces established in this combined area so that there are nooks that are welcoming for reading, eating, playing board games, and visiting with friends/family. Because we have a large family (3 children and 3 adults in the house) it's nice to have different uses for the areas to add variety throughout the day.

Combined Living/Dining:

Using lighter colors in your medium-sized room will make it feel more airy and bright

For your main color, we chose to use a warm, neutral, gray because it is neutral and seen as elegant and classy. It compliments many colors such as white, blue, and yellow and works well as part of a color scheme in any room.

Use an eggshell or satin finish paint which has a very light touch of shine (similar texture to an eggshell as implied by its name). This finish is very often used for walls and is more durable and easier to clean than matte finish
